Stupid Experiments
Most animal experiments have little hope of advancing human health, but now and again, an unusually absurd study rears its ugly head. These experiments seem so ridiculous to experts and laypeople alike that one immediately wonders how the experimenter secured funding for such balderdash. In the fight to save animal lives and public money, these studies should be the first to go, so PETA is exposing these cruel and useless tests for what they are: stupid experiments. Take a look at some of the featured stupid experiments that PETA has uncovered.
Rabbits Tortured on TreadmillsMedical experts agree that moderate exercise is good for pregnant women and their babies, but Kathleen O’Hagan is still experimenting on pregnant rabbits to study this very issue. O’Hagan is surgically implanting probes in 60 pregnant rabbits, forcing them to run on a motorized treadmill, and then killing them and their hundreds of babies. Now that’s a stupid experiment. Eliot Spindel's Nicotine Study in PrimatesThe dangers of smoking during pregnancy have long been understood, but that hasn’t stopped Eliot Spindel from poisoning pregnant animals and their babies with nicotine injections. In his most absurd study to date, Spindel gave vitamin C supplements to nicotine-exposed pregnant monkeys in the hope of making it “safer” to smoke while pregnant. Read more.
David J. Earnest's Alcohol and Circadian Rhythm Study in Pregnant Rats Under the guise of studying fetal alcohol syndrome, David Earnest is examining sleep problems in baby rats who are force-fed alcohol. Perhaps Earnest is unaware that human infants don’t binge-drink after birth. Maybe he doesn’t know that rats are nocturnal animals with vastly different sleeping patterns than those of humans. Whatever the case, Earnest’s experiment is undoubtedly stupid. Read more.
Reza Hakkak's Diet and Breast Cancer Research on RatsThe Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is paying for Dr. Reza Hakkak to cut out rats’ ovaries, pump the animals full of cancer-causing drugs, and see if the fat rats get cancer at a higher rate. It’s anyone’s guess why the Komen Foundation is wasting donor money and animal lives to study the link between excess weight and breast cancer, which has already been proved many times in human studies.
